Dedicated servers for Aliens vs Predator

The PC version of licensed shooter Aliens vs Predator will support dedicated servers, according to a new statement made by British developer Rebellion.
"Despite rumours, Rebellion has always been planning to support dedicated servers for Aliens vs Predator PC and we can now officially confirm that this is the case. Rebellion has always appreciated fan support," said Rebellion CEO Jason Kingsley. "We're really looking forward to the release of Aliens vs Predator as much as you guys are!"
Previously senior producer David Brickley had remained uncommitted on the question, commenting: "You know what the internet's like. We're obviously used to getting things for free over the years. I guess on our side the thing we're focusing on is whatever your set-up at home, you get the best possible experience from it. We're just trying to use our time and resources wisely."
Brickley's comments were made just as the question of dedicated servers was becoming a flashpoint topic with PC users, following Infinity Ward's decision not to support the style of service. Despite a more than 220,000 signature strong petition Activision indicated it was "not overly concerned" at the backlash.
Nevertheless, other PC developers immediately made their position clear, with both Battlefield's DICE and Brink's Splash Damage committing to continued use of dedicated servers.
John Carmack of iD Software surprised many though, when he admitted that the forthcoming game Rage would probably not support dedicated servers and described them as a remnant of the early days of PC gaming.
Carmack even seemed appreciative that Activision had taken the initial brunt of fan outrage."The great thing is we won't have to be a pioneer on that," he said to Hollywood trade paper Variety. "We’ll see how it works out for everyone else."

AvP will use Steam Cloud, have 18-way multiplay, four-way co-op

August 20th, 2009 @ 10:26
By Patrick Garratt

Sega said at GamesCom yesterday that Rebellion’s Aliens Vs Predator will have a good variety of multiplayer modes and make decent use of Steam’s feature-set.
All three formats – PC, PS3, 360 – will have 18-way multiplayer, we were told after a demo, and all will fgeature mixed and pure-species game modes.
“If you’re playing on PC, we’re also leveraging Valve Steamworks to provide anti-cheat matchmaking Achievements, and we’re using Steam Cloud as well, so your saved games and settings” can carry over onto any PC you happen to be using, Sega chap Rob Bartholemew said.
Four-player co-op will be present in a Survival mode, where you and friends play as marines facing waves of aliens. Sounds a bit like Gears 2’s Horde mode.
It all looked very good from where we were sitting. Very bloody. Screamy, even. It’s out early next year. copy from VG247 » Blog Archive » AvP will use Steam Cloud, have 18-way multiplay, four-way co-op

Default Demo out 4th

From SEGA:

QuotePlay as a Colonial Marine, Alien and Predator in a multiplayer Deathmatch demo. Hunter. Survivor. Prey. Which will you be?

LONDON AND SAN FRANCISCO (February 3rd, 2010) – SEGA® Europe Ltd. and SEGA® of America, Inc. can today reveal that an online multiplayer demo will be released for the upcoming FPS action sci-fi title, Aliens vs Predator. The demo will be released simultaneously on Xbox Live, PlayStation Network and STEAM on February 4th.

The multiplayer demo will allow gamers the chance to play as all three species – the Colonial Marine, the Predator and the Alien – and pitch their skills against each other in Deathmatch mode on Refinery, one of the game’s multiplayer maps.

“The team at Rebellion has created a truly immersive multiplayer experience with three completely different and compelling playable species. We believe that Aliens vs Predator offers gamers a unique alternative to the current FPS multiplayer games on the market, and sets a precedent for the evolution of multiplayer gaming in the genre,” said Gary Knight, European Marketing Director of SEGA Europe.

“Multiplayer was a huge part of our original AVP game back in 1999, and we’ve kept the spirit of that classic experience in creating the multiplayer for our new Aliens vs Predator. With the demo now gamers can get to grips with each of the three iconic species so they can hone their skills and be ready for when the game launches and battle commences,” said Jason Kingsley, CEO and Creative Director of Rebellion.

Aliens vs Predator allows players to take the role of each of the three infamous species; the Colonial Marine, the Predator and the Alien. Each of the three species has its very own distinct story-driven single-player campaign mode that interweaves with the campaigns of the other two species.

Aliens vs Predator also features unique 3-way online multiplayer, giving gamers the chance to pit the three species against each other in the ultimate battle for survival and for the right to be crowned the deadliest species. Aliens vs Predator has seven multiplayer modes in total: Infestation, Survivor, Predator Hunt, Domination, Deathmatch, Species Deathmatch and Mix Species Deathmatch.

Aliens vs Predator is set to be released on Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system and PC Games For Windows on February 16th in America and February 19th in Europe
